With the Christmas Holiday party season in full swing, many of us make adjustments to our beauty routine at this time of year. This is particularly the case if you are burning the candle at both ends and want to retain your youthful appearance, keep your energy levels up and have the best time possible!

Whilst the festive season is fundamentally much deeper than how we look, in that it’s a time to connect, forgive, and rekindle friendships - we can’t help but want to look at our best, yet the busyness, crowds and late nights can subject us to coughs, colds and and a generally run down feeling.

Our skin also battles the elements - in both hemispheres! In the North not only is there the bitterly cold temperatures, wind, rain and snow to contend with… our skin is also subjected to the dehydrating effects of central heating. Whilst the harsh sun and long days spent out in it, and a switch to air conditioning can also dehydrate, damage and burn.

In a nutshell, this time of year takes a lot out of us so it’s important to nurture yourself and adjust your health and beauty routine to look your best this party season. Here are some aspects to consider:

HYDRATION

Water is essential for the healthy function of all our organs, including our skin, and when you are dehydrated it shows on the skin like an external mirror reflecting what is going on inside. Dehydration is one of the most visible culprits when it comes to not looking at your best - it is what leads to dark circles around the eyes and dull lifeless skin. It also leaves you feeling sluggish, tired and bloated as your body attempts to retain what little water remains. The more water you drink (particularly in the party season) the better your appearance will be, and the better you will feel on the inside too. It’s important to note that drinks that contain caffeine and alcohol often dehydrate, rather than hydrate you.

For each cup of coffee, soft drink or cocktail you consume, drink an additional glass of water to compensate for the dehydrating effect - in addition to the recommended 1.5 - 2 litres a day.

HAIR

Interestingly, the amount of water you drink not only affects your skin, but also your hair.  In fact, the more water you drink the more nourished and vibrant your hair will look and feel. Whilst the amount of water you drink won’t have any effect on long lasting hair extensions it will make your natural hair much more radiant - especially after a big night out, or lots of time in pools or the beach!

Hair masks can also help and there are some beautifully nourishing options available both in salon treatments and at home use for managing dryness, frizz, texture and volume. For a cheap at home hair hydration fix, try using coconut oil in your hair overnight, a few days before an event, as this will make your hair look much more silky, smooth and radiant; just be sure to use an old pillowcase and wash and rinse thoroughly the next day.

SKIN

If you’re coming up to an important social event, treat your skin to a deep clean and organic face mask, but be sure not to leave this too close to the event, as face masks can draw out impurities - meaning it can take a day or two for your skin to settle.

For blemishes consider applying a spot remover the night before, rather than relying solely on makeup to cover it up.  And always, always, take your makeup off before bed!

That said, drinking plenty of water, a daily does of greens, and choosing healthier food and drink options as much as possible is the best remedy for lasting inside-out beauty any day.
