Is It Time For A Big End-Of-Year Throw-Out?

It’s not uncommon for our homes to become way too filled with 'stuff,' some of it useful, some of it trash. It happens as busy and creative lives happen, and some say it's a sign of having fun. The fresh nature of Spring can be the perfect time to exercise some organisation, and prepare you for Christmas and the new year long before the sunshine draws you outside and the party season distracts you. Besides avoiding ending up on an episode of Hoarders there are many reasons why you may choose to have a big throw out this year. These few could help you enjoy the last quarter in style, and prepare you for 2019 with a refreshed home in every respect.

When throwing out stuff, you begin to open up space in your home for new stuff, new ideas, new living! Think of all that room for activities - socialising, stretching, sewing - you get my drift. However, the mere act of organizing if items should be thrown, kept or re-purposed can mean you re-organize your space effectively, even if you choose to keep a majority of the items you filter. Grouping like items together for more purposeful storage, finding long-lost items in drawers and cupboards, and finding a better home for items you need no longer can be a deeply fruitful activity.

If you're going whole hog on the house, garage, basement and garden, it might be a smart to hire skip bins. Be ruthless and if you find yourself holding onto items because they ‘may have a use,’ despite no realistic long-term valuation growth, it's gotta go. Apply a stringent mindset for the best success. And do a little dance in your newfound spaciousness!

A home is much more than a home. It’s the anchor for our mental space, not just our physical. This means that the content and setup of our homes also has a large impact on our daily functioning and clear thinking. Just think how hard it is to work at an extremely messy desk. It can be stressful, overwhelming, daunting and lead to sloppy work and sloppy habits. When that desk is cleaned, organized and sense is applied to its sorting system, all of a sudden your best work can be expressed.

Adjusting your home in this way should be considered very important to do for you and everyone who lives and visits there. A home rid of its junk built over years can feel fresh, new, and the space can become redefined to your modern needs. This goes for your home office, your bathroom space, the comfort of your bedroom, and the organization of your child’s bedrooms too. All of this can gift you a clear boost in your general mental state, and help you become your best self in the long term.

“A simple life is not seeing how little we can get by with—that’s poverty—but how efficiently we can put first things first. . . . When you’re clear about your purpose and your priorities, you can painlessly discard whatever does not support these, whether it’s clutter in your cabinets or commitments on your calendar.”

New Utility

But don't only consider the mental benefits of clearing out your space, nor the re-purposing of certain items you decide to keep. A massive benefit of clearing out your home is that new utility can show its head. You might find that decorating for Christmas becomes that little more pleasant an experience. You might finally decide to knock that wall through and enjoy a kitchen/dining room together rather than separately. You might organize and orient your living room furniture to feel more comfortable, and operate the focal point around the fireplace and television rather than the odd-angles you have been dealing with so far. You could even take this as an opportunity to begin new renovation efforts, to enjoy your home as you’ve been meaning to all these years, and generally adapt your home to the pressing needs of your immediate tastes.

With these humble tips, the simple art of throwing things out
could help your home once again become your castle.
