Selling on Depop Is Changing My Relationship With Shopping
Share
I started using Depop as a way to clean up my wardrobe and get a little extra cash, but it’s become so much more than that. It’s helped me realign with my true style - not the fleeting trends or panic purchases I used to make when nothing in my closet felt quite right.
Over the past year, I’ve noticed something unexpected: selling on Depop has actually made me a more intentional shopper. I’ve stopped grabbing random “inspo” from social media and started tuning back into the clothes that actually feel like me. That cool-but-comfortable, a little quirky, soul-aligned vibe I always come back to - especially as I shift and evolve through aging.
The Search Function Is Lowkey Magic
started searching for specific pieces I genuinely love: flattering mini skirts with a bit of stretch, easy-to-style mini dresses that hug in the right places, colourful sneakers, oversized or unique button-ups, even clean fragrances. And the Depop algorithm caught on quickly. Now my feed shows me the best of the best across these categories—often from brands I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.
It’s like having a personalized epic boutique in my pocket, minus the musty smells and dig-through-the-racks overwhelm.
The “3 Out, 1 In” Rule That Keeps Me Honest
To avoid falling into another cycle of overconsumption, I follow a rule: for every one thing I bring in, I need to sell at least three. Honestly, most months I sell way more than I buy. And my closet feels so much better for it. There's breathing room. Space to see what I actually love. Nothing is crammed or crinkled or hiding with tags still on.
A Cheaper Way to Try On My Dream Style
One unexpected perk? I’ve been able to test-drive my evolving style without breaking the bank. Sometimes, I’ll find a full-price piece on a brand’s website and then spot it on Depop for half the price—because someone accidentally bought two or it didn’t fit them right. It’s made expressing myself through clothes feel easier, lighter, and less wasteful. And, if what I purchase from Depop doesn't quite work out for me - I simply RE-pop it, sometimes selling it for more than I purchased for.
Aging Gracefully (and Playfully) Through Style
As I’ve gotten older, my relationship with clothes has changed. I no longer want to dress for “likes” or impress anyone with how current I am. I want to feel good in my skin. I want to play. And Depop, weirdly enough, has become a tool for that. It lets me experiment without pressure. Sell what doesn’t work. Rebuy what sparks joy. Revisit brands I loved in my 20s and find their grown-up versions now.
It’s not about being trendy. It’s about being true.
