Falling in Love with Reformer Pilates: Why This Movement Practice Is Here to Stay

There’s something about reformer Pilates that feels like an art form - a blend of breath, intention, and subtle strength that sneaks up on you in all the best ways. What started as a curious class booking has now become one of the most powerful routines in my week - and honestly, in my life.

I’m now going 5–6 times a week. And I’m not just stronger. I’m more supported, more confident, and more me in my body. This movement method has become a non-negotiable part of my routine, and here’s why I think it’s not just having a moment—it’s a movement that’s here to stay.

The Art and Intelligence Behind Pilates

Pilates isn’t just about toning your core or stretching on a machine. It’s a deeply intelligent form of movement that focuses on building strength from the inside out. Think small, controlled movements, coordinated with breath and full-body awareness.

There’s a kind of presence required in Pilates that connects you not just to your physical body, but to your inner world. It’s grounding. It’s sculpting. It’s restorative. You’re not thrashing your body - you’re honoring it.

Reformer Pilates, specifically, uses a spring-based resistance machine to support and challenge you in all the right ways. It meets you where you're at, while still encouraging growth. Some days you’re focused on control and core, other days it’s all about opening the hips, building the glutes, or lengthening the spine. Each class feels like a beautifully choreographed dance of intention and resistance.

My Weekly Movement Routine (And Why It Works)

Right now, my rhythm looks like this:

  • Reformer Pilates 4-5x a week – My main movement anchor.

  • 10k steps every second day – To keep circulation and natural energy up.

  • 1x upper body gym session – A short strength training session to support posture and tone.

This trio has been the sweet spot for my energy, hormones, mood, and physical strength - especially as someone with scoliosis and arthritic (ex-dancer) knees. Before Pilates, I was at the chiropractor every second week. Now? I feel more supported in my back, glutes, and quads than ever before.

Not only have I reduced my need for outside treatment so regularly, I’m moving through daily tasks with more ease, and feeling more resilient to injury. Pilates has helped me build the kind of foundational strength that truly supports a full life.

The Physical (and Unexpected) Benefits

The visible changes are real: I’ve noticed a more sculpted waist, stronger legs, and a longer, more confident posture. But it’s the deeper shifts that have really moved me:

  • Improved core stability

  • Greater awareness of how I carry myself throughout the day

  • Reduced knee and back pain

  • A new respect for my body’s ability to heal and grow

  • More confidence in my own skin

There’s something beautiful about falling in love with movement again - especially when it feels like your body is working with you, not against you.

It's a Vibe: Community, Confidence & Cute Socks

One unexpected joy? The style. Pilates has given me an excuse to clean out my daggy old workout wardrobe and embrace the dancer style of my youth - soft flared leggings, wrap tops, built-in cami bras, and the cutest grippy socks I never knew I needed. It's not a fashion show foranyone else but ME, coz dressing the part helps me feel the part - graceful, strong, and present.

There’s also something confidence-building about being in a class full of women who are all focused on their own growth. No one's watching you (except the instructor), and yet there’s this shared energy of encouragement. It’s quiet (from outside disruptions, even though we play bangers!), powerful, and has helped me forge new female friendships in a really organic way.

I even got my mum into it. While she jokes she feels like a bent-up pretzel some days, I can already see a change in how she carries herself and how it’s affecting her independence in the rest of her life. That kind of ripple effect is so beautiful to witness.

Why Pilates Is Having a Moment—And Why It Deserves to Stay

I believe Pilates is trending right now because we’re collectively craving movement that:

  • Supports our nervous system, not spikes it

  • Builds strength without burning us out

  • Feels mindful, not mindless

  • Is equal parts form, function, and feeling

It’s one of the few modalities that genuinely blends sculpting with softness, effort with ease. You get results - but you also get presence, flow, and fun. In a world that often pushes “go hard or go home,” Pilates gently whispers, “go within.”

The Dream (Because I'm Manifesting It)

Next on my vision board: building my dream at-home Pilates studio. A beautiful nook with a reformer, mat space, aesthetic storage, calming mood lighting, and playlists that move me. It’s not just about convenience - it’s about creating a space that supports the version of me I’m becoming.

If you’ve been thinking about trying Pilates - this is your nudge. Whether it’s reformer, mat, or virtual, give it a go. You might just fall in love with how it makes you feel, inside and out.

Your body deserves to feel supported. Your mind deserves to feel clear. And your life deserves movement that feels like medicine.
