Declutter & Cash In: How Selling on Depop Can Fund Your Glow-Up, Goals & Growth

Your Sign to Declutter (And Make Money!)
We all have stuff—clothes that don’t feel like us anymore, books collecting dust, decor we’ve outgrown. And let’s be real, they’re taking up space not just in our homes, but in our energy too.
So if you’ve been waiting for a sign to declutter, this is it - and bonus? You can turn that clutter into cash with Depop.
Covid, Clutter, and Cash!
In the past six months, I’ve made $986.63, and most of my more focused changes have been in just the last three - so there’s so much more potential to tap into.
After the pandemic, my lifestyle had changed dramatically. I moved from a big city back to my regional hometown, single, and it was honestly sad to see so many of my dressier outfits, shoes, and even my Gucci Soho Disco bag sitting unused. When our environments change, adapt we must - otherwise, be prepared to pay exorbitant storage fees, hope your things stay safe, dry, and mould free, and hope you never need to lug it all a thousand miles in your next move. Or you can sell it on and trust new abundance to come your way, in new ways.
Style and Space Transformation
I love fashion, and over the past five years, I’ve been honing and refining my style. Selling on Depop has been a great way to pass these beloved pieces on to someone else who will love them, while also freeing up space and making extra money - money that, when added up, can be substantially handy in this economy. It’s helped me continue my fashion transformation, invest in my wellness routine, and stay motivated toward new business pursuits and money-making ideas.
Little Effort, Big Payoff
Some might say, Oh, why bother? It takes too long. Or, Ugh, going to the post office is annoying. But allocating just an hour a week to listing and shipping can make future you so grateful - whether it’s a rainy day fund, a cushion ahead of a financial goal, or even just a little extra to treat yourself.
Why Depop?
Depop makes it easy to sell fashion, accessories, books, home decor, and more - all from your phone. I chose Depop over other platforms such as eBay because of its demographic, popularity, and ease of use. It’s a modern thrifting platform where people love unique, secondhand finds, or brand new 'mistake' purchases that you can't return. So those vintage jeans, minimalist mugs, or new money handbags you never use? Someone out there wants them, and will pay you for them.
What Could You Do with the Extra Money?
Instead of letting old items take up space, turn them into:
✨ Investment in Your Business: Whether it’s launching a side hustle, growing your personal brand, or even starting your own online shop, every dollar counts.
✨ Upgrading Your Wardrobe: Swap fast fashion for well-made, timeless pieces that reflect who you are now. It’s about quality, not quantity.
✨ Prioritizing Your Well-being: Imagine using your earnings to support your health - better nutrition, skincare that actually works, or supplements that help you feel your best. (Hint: I’ve got some favorites from my wellness business!)
How to Start Selling on Depop in 5 Steps
- Declutter Ruthlessly – If it doesn’t fit, if you haven’t worn or used it in over a year, or if it doesn’t spark joy (thanks, Marie Kondo), it’s time to list it. This is also a great time to try everything on and see if it can be styled with anything else or if it just doesn’t suit your lifestyle anymore.
- Take Good Photos – Natural lighting, clear angles, and simple backgrounds work best. Show details and any imperfections so buyers know what to expect. Look up the item online, especially if it’s brand new with tags or not that old - the brand’s promo and model shots can showcase the item strikingly and help attract buyers. If you get really serious, you can use a mannequin or dressmaker’s dolly to photograph the item in all its glory.
- Write a Solid Description – Be honest, include brand names, sizing info, and style keywords so people searching can find your listing easily. I also talk about stretch and fabric feel, how I would style it, or whether it’s perfect for work-to-bar or could be dressed down with sneakers for a relaxed weekend look. Paint the picture that you care and that this item has value!
- Offer Bundling Discounts – Encourage buyers to purchase multiple items by offering bundle deals. This not only helps you sell more but also saves on shipping fuss and increases your overall earnings. Be sure to mention bundling in your description - I keep a bundling message saved in the notes on my phone and simply copy and paste it into every listing.
- Sort Out Shipping – Shipping might seem like a hassle, but it’s really just about getting into a rhythm. Depop allows you to set shipping costs or offer free shipping (which can make your items, especially higher ticket items, more appealing). Packaging neatly and using compostable mailers or recycled materials is a great touch (I talk more about this on TikTok). Keep it simple, and once you have a system in place, set days where you take a trip to the post office become exciting - it's your *sTuFf* going off into the big wide world to be loved once more!
The Ripple Effect of Letting Go
One of the coolest things about Depop? You might just find something amazing for yourself while you’re there! But, if you’re prone to shopaholic tendencies, set a limit - after all, the goal is to declutter, not refill your wardrobe with impulse buys.
I tell everyone about Depop now, and working in fashion retail, I see firsthand how even a little extra income can go a long way - both money-wise and in the confidence of making your own side hustle income that could grow into something bigger. Plus, clearing out the clothes that don’t really work for you anymore gives you a blank canvas to rewrite your style. Whether you want to be more creative, minimal, or eco friendly, selling on Depop is a step in the right direction.
Selling your old items isn’t just about money - it’s about momentum. It’s a small action that can lead to bigger shifts. Decluttering helps you make space for the life you actually want, whether that’s a fresh start with your style, a business move, or simply feeling lighter and more aligned.
I’ll be sharing more tips, behind-the-scenes peeks, and how I’m using this exact strategy in my own life over on TikTok (@vp_sam). If you’re ready to clear out the old, make room for the new, and maybe even invest in your glow-up, come along for the ride.
